Defamer Takes the Valleywag Route

February 23, 2009 by Thord Daniel Hedengren

It appears as if Nick Denton wasn’t able to sell his celebrity gossip (aren’t they all?) blog Defamer. Instead, it is now becoming a part of Gawker.com – the entertainment column according to PaidContent. Said business site is quoting a blog post written by Denton which unfortunately is no longer available, it just redirects to the not so updated nickdenton.org blog – it’s back up! Assuming PaidContent got it right, Denton said “the brand was worth more to us — as a section of the Gawker site”.

Free translation: The bids we got were too low, and we can use the 900,000 monthlies to strengthen our key brand.

The defamer.com site will show all Defamer posts from Gawker, but the team is leaving to do something else, yet to be announced.

You might remember Valleywag making a similar transition late last year.

WordPress Rules the Technorati Top 100, TypePad Too

January 16, 2009 by Thord Daniel Hedengren

Pingdom took a look at the Technorati Top 100 blogs to see what blogging platform was the most widely used one. I can’t say I’m the least surprised to see that WordPress finished at the top. Looking at the self-hosted blogs, 27 (ie 27%) run WordPress, 12 rolls on Movable Type, 8 are custom made, and 4 use Drupal. Looking at hosted blog platform, TypePad finishes at the top with 16 blogs, Blogsmith rolls 14, WordPress.com only has 5, and 3 use Blogger. Worth noting is that Gawker Media blogs has their own platform, and it isn’t listed, whereas AOL Weblogs Inc, use Blogsmith.

For even more number crunching and graphs, check out the excellent run-through at the Royal Pingdom blog, including a full list.

Gina Trapani Steps Down at Lifehacker, Adam Pash New Lead Editor

January 6, 2009 by Thord Daniel Hedengren

Popular blog Lifehacker, a part of the Gawker Media blog network, is seeing some changes come January 16. Lead editor Gina Trapani is stepping down, and Adam Pash will take her place.

After a wild and woolly four years at the helm, I’m stepping down from the site lead position to work on Some New Stuff on a day-to-day basis in 2009. To be clear, my decision has nothing to do with the big bad economy or any kind of scandalous company blow-up—it’s just time for me to move onto new projects. It’s tough letting go of something I love so dearly, but it’s easier knowing it will be in very capable hands.

Good to hear, no Nick Denton slashing the workforce this time.

Adam Pash has been a Lifehacker contributor for 3 years, so he should know how things work. Also, Gina Trapani will continue to post on the blog, as well as do some other stuff, so she’s not disappearing totally. A little more in the announcement post.

Gawker Media Continues to Break Traffic Records

November 25, 2008 by Thord Daniel Hedengren

Recession or no, people surely won’t stop reading the Gawker Media sites, and as long as Denton & Co. can continue to sell ads on a CPM basis, they should be able to ride this one through. October is another record high, according to the network site, clocking in at 297 million pageviews, and 22 million unique visitors. Crazy.

More at the Gawker Media site, and over at Quantcast.
