Flyover Country Capitalizing on MySpace

Think sophisticated web savvy entrepreneurs exist on the coasts? Think again. The Courier Journal, a local newspaper for Louisville, Kentucky reports on how some local businesses have been using MySpace to its advantage.

Taverns, clothing stores and gift shops — many of them independently owned — are creating virtual profiles of themselves on the site as an informal approach to free online advertising. For Peter Berkowitz, owner of Old Louisville Coffee House, the effort was so successful that he abandoned his traditional Web site in favor of MySpace.

Think what you will of MySpace, but for an opportunity for 1) free and 2) easy access to a wide audience, its clear there’s an advantage for many businesses.  Even local brick and mortar stores in an place you wouldn’t, perhaps, never think of as social media mavens.
