TweetUp today announced the acquisition of popular Android app Twidroid and RSS news aggregator Popurls.
For those unfamiliar with Popurls, the service hand picks top technology RSS feeds from services that include Digg, Reddit and various popular tech blogs. The service has developed a “cult like” following in the technological sector.
By pairing Twidroid and Popurls Tweeup hopes to find a solution which will provide an outlet to capture the thoughts of the “world’s best tweeters.”
TweetUp Bill Gross told Mashable of the acquisition:
“Twidroyd is widely considered the best Twitter client for Android phones and it leads in market share, so its growing base of users will be a valuable source of well-informed feedback on TweetUp search on mobile devices. In addition, the popurls website, which attracts users looking for a convenient guide to the most popular sites, news, videos and blogs on the Internet, will be a natural spot to display TweetUp search results and gain user feedback.”
Special note: Twitdroid is changing their name to Twidroyd to avoid a lawsuit from George Lucas who owns the droid name.
The acquisition pairing shouldn’t come as a surprise with Twidroyd and Popurls created by the same man, Austrian entrepreneur Thomas Marban.
Marban said of the acquisition:
“With their resources and experience along with the bundling deals we have developed with a number of the leading device manufacturers, we believe Twidroyd can widen its lead as the top Android client for Twitter users and aggressively grow our distribution while taking advantage of TweetUp’s business model for uncovering the best tweeters on topics of interest to our users.”
Translation: PopUrls and TwtDroyd finally have a sustainable way to monetize their services which they hadn’t had before the acquisition.
If you’re still unfamiliar with the program and you’re about to buy a Google Android based device, you may have your work cut out for you when it comes to obtaining the program, during the acquisition announcement it was also said that Twidroyd “will soon “come standard on millions of upcoming Android phones from five of the leading handset manufacturers.”
The announcement of the inclusion is a big boost for Twidroyd and an interesting development when placed against the official Twitter android app.
