For its 80th anniversary, Holiday On Ice dazzled audiences with 174 shows in 21 German cities. The spellbinding spectacle showcased not just skilled figure skating, but also innovative lighting technology supplied by Claypaky Volero Wave and Scenius profile lights.
Enchanting narratives, well-executed routines, and spectacular sets created a feast for the eyes. The seamless integration of art, technology, and performance proved captivating, with both romantic numbers and high-flying stunts leaving audiences awestruck.
Light Designer Tim Routledge and Lighting Programmer James Scott utilized around 300 projectors and a large three-dimensional LED screen to create a dynamic visual backdrop. Additionally, intricate beam-shaping and HD projections transformed the ice rink into an immersive canvas. The implementation of kinetic lighting, synchronizing with the movements and music, enriched the theatricality of the performance.
Credit goes to Routledge, Scott, and the backstage crew for the success of this technological marvel.
Illuminating Holiday On Ice: a tech perspective
Their innovation and meticulous planning truly highlighted the potential of modern technology in enhancing sensory and artistic experiences.
The lighting design brilliantly complimented the fluid movements of the skaters, enhancing on-ice choreography with bright colors, patterns, and timed effects. The lighting set-up, with its 225 kinetic light fixtures, was the heart of the design. Together with 68 Claypaky Scenius Profiles used for an array of lighting effects, and 50 Robe MegaPointe moving lights for dramatic aerial and beam effects, the lights produced a perfectly synchronized show.
In addition, 16 Claypaky Volero Wave fixtures were installed on the grid above the ice, demonstrating technical proficiency by generating simultaneous complex and simple illumination effects. Their durable and versatile performance, even in close proximity to pyro effects, contributed significantly to the flawless execution of the event, highlighting the trustworthiness of these fixtures.
Rentall Europe and the Claypaky Community Management team offered technical support and resources throughout the tour, ensuring any potential obstacles were promptly addressed. The resilience and versatility of the fixtures received high praise, enhancing the guest’s experience and adding to the tour’s resounding success. This collaboration illustrates a remarkable synergy of commitment, technical skill, and top-notch equipment, leaving audiences longing for more.
