The researchers analyzed more than 1.4 million search results and found considerable reduction in AI summaries’ frequency. Simultaneously, the content was condensed to nearly half, pointing to a major shift in Google’s search algorithm.

This adjustment signifies a heightened emphasis on brevity and accuracy within Google’s summary results, potentially affecting internet-based businesses’ visibilities and SEO strategies. The study’s data highlighted YouTube, LinkedIn, and Healthline as the most frequently cited platforms in AI snippets, reinforcing their reputability in their respective industries. Interestingly, government and educational sites, particularly with .gov domains, were more commonly found in AI summaries, while there were fewer .edu domain references. This could suggest AI’s preference for authoritative governmental resources over educational sites.

Large media corporations, Forbes and Business Insider, also had a notable presence in AI summaries, pointing to a bias towards reputable sources. However, this disproportionate representation might lead to an echo chamber effect, exposing readers mainly to similar perspectives. Thus, creating inclusive algorithms that consider a wide gamut of viewpoints should be considered.

The AI summaries also showed industry-specific discrepancies, with the Relationships and Food and Beverage industries getting more representation. However, the appearances of the Fashion, Beauty, Pets, and E-commerce sectors dropped. Regardless of these shifts, the AI industry continues to diversify its focus, striving for balanced representation.

Surprisingly, the study found a significant number of links to Indian domains, especially in the Sports and Exercise category, and a lack of references to popular information platforms like Reddit and Quora. This finding suggests the need for further investigation into the nature of information sourcing in AI systems and reinforces the necessity for diversifying these sources to ensure a rounded representation of the available information.
