Adsense revenues decline on the back of London Bombing, also delivering strange and inappropriate results

Anecdotal evidence is suggesting that the London bombings have seen a down turn in Adsense advertising reveune amongst blogs as readers have sought out information in relation to the bombings and focused less on other matters.

CTR rates (which cant be disclosed due to Google terms) hit record lows across the Weblog Empire network overnight at the same time as traffic surged as people searched for bombing news.

Darren Rowse from Problogger also reported by email to The Blog Herald that CTR rates where down across his blogs but like Weblog Empire reported an increase in traffic.

The results could also be reflective of strange and inappropriate returns from the contextual engine powering Adsense.

The main ads here at the Blog Herald this morning showed advertisers urging readers to support our troops, partners of peace and a DVD of the Six Day War. An RSS ad for Jason Calacanis weblog as promoting a Tsunami Report, whilst the website showed ads for Novelty Toilet Paper Art. Jeremy Wright’s Ensight.org included ads for “Sexy Guys and Girls”.

  • See you’ve got some meaningless comment spam above, Duncan.

Dave Sifry has just reported on Technorati’s day yesterday : “The blogosphere’s reaction with an outpouring of emotion has been tremendous. There were just over 500,000 posts since from Midnight – 11AM Pacific (bombings took place at 12:51AM Pacific. This represents a 29.8% increase from yesterday’s 840,000 posts (385,000 from midnight-11 am yesterday).”

  • No, I didn’t have a downturn after the 7/7 bombings, in fact I had a small increase, but I had a significant downturn after the 21/7 failed bombings. Even though traffic levels remained about the same, CTR and revenues dropped to less than 1/4 of normal. And my posts covering the London attacks are mostly getting no ads/PSAs, where after 7/7 they were getting proper ads.
