Yahoo! indexing No Follow Links?

Loren has a disturbing report over at the Search Engine Journal in relation to the V7ndotcom elursrebmem SEO contest which demonstrates that Yahoo! is indexing links with the rel=no follow attribute, which was meant to be the big thing to stop comment spam….perhaps the comment spammers already know this which is why we all keep getting a pile of comment spam rubbish every day?

  • The nofollow thing was crap anyway. It only resulted in less search engine relevance for bloggers who don’t spam but post insightful comments instead. The whole nofollow thing was and is a sick joke which probably serves a lot better to keep us bloggers out of the search indexes than to prevent commentspam. Comment spam hasn’t reduced at all after it was introduced.

  • I don’t see how this will be effective. Yeah, they may not get picked up by a search engine, but it would allow them to place a link none-the-less (and sucker someone into visiting their site).

CAPTCHA is far more effective in my opinion.

  • Yeah, it’s been like that for a while now. What’s more, testing indicates that it isn’t *only* Yahoo! that’s following, and passing link reputation… the other *big boys* are, too {nudge nudge, wink wink} ;-)

  • Andre, I’ve been seeing that as well. A certain SE that starts with a G followed a link I had setup with nofollow. The company who ran the affiliate program it belonged to didn’t take too kindly to it either, when I got the #1 and later #2 spot for their main keywords. Almost cost me a lot of money, and I didn’t even do anything wrong! Gee, and it was G that came up with this idea in the first place!

  • Yep. That’s a fact, and as was mentioned they are not alone and it’s not new. It’s just that the seo types are just now realizing that what they assumed but never bothered to test wasn’t so.

Ultimately this is a good thing. Start using some real solutions like captchas or community filters like akismet. It will also force the blogging platforms to address the isue as WordPress has begun to do instead of foisting it off on the search engines who really have no interest in your blog. (your in the general sense)
