Why Bloggers Need to Understand Google Rankbrain

rankbrain

Ranking well in Google search results is very important to having a successful site. It does not matter how good your content is, if no one is able to easily find it. It is possible to create your content a certain way that it will rank higher in search engine results. While there is no set and clear way to figure out how Google ranks sites, we do have some some information that gives us a general picture. There are three likely sources that Google uses in ranking: back links, content and Rankbrain. While figuring out back links and content is easy, Rankbrain has left many people scratching their head.

Basically, Rankbrain is an algorithm developed by Google. This algorithm is a formula that helps translate search engine queries into language that Google can process. Using artificial intelligence, Rankbrain can take the typed request and turn it into something the search engine can understand and use to produce results.

Seopressor.com gives the perfect example. For instance, you type in “New York Times Puzzle.” Rankbrain uses its artificial intelligence technology and translates this into “Puzzle?Crossword (New York Times)” Do you see how it changed the context and wording to clarify what you were looking for.

A key feature of Rankbrain’s technology is that it continues to learn. As it translates more queries, it begins to track similarities and note new information to correctly guess what you are looking for. This alrgorith was developed to do a job that no human could easily do. It can handle complex searches for new terms with much more accuracy than a human could do.

Why does Rankbrain matter?

While Rankbrain didn’t drastically change the way Google ranks sites, it is important for bloggers to understand how this technology works. It plays a part in Google’s overall algorithm: the Hummingbird algorithm. Searchengineland.com explains this concept very well:

“Hummingbird is the overall search algorithm, just like a car has an overall engine in it. The engine itself may be made up of various parts, such as an oil filter, a fuel pump, a radiator and so on. In the same way, Hummingbird encompasses various parts, with RankBrain being one of the newest.

Hummingbird also contains other parts with names familiar to those in the SEO space, such as Panda, Penguin and Payday designed to fight spam, Pigeon designed to improve local results, Top Heavy designed to demote ad-heavy pages, Mobile Friendly designed to reward mobile-friendly pages and Pirate designed to fight copyright infringement.”

Rankbrain will continue to develop over time. While it does not affect SEO practices much right now, it could have more of an impact later. For right now, we know that it does play a major role in getting found on Google.
